Best places to buy vintage clothing online

Updated on April 27, 2012

I have been in the vintage clothing business for coming up on seven years now, and it has always been surprising to me that out of the thousands of online vintage vendors, there are very few who offer a good selection, as well as a good website to shop from.

Below are five websites that I have found to be good for their selection, website design, and product descriptions.

RustyZipper

This site was the first site that I bought a vintage item from. The selection is immense and I love how they have a ton of items for guys. I also love that they provide themed ideas for holidays and other events, and their wholesale lots if you want to get a good deal on many items. Good site layout and a search feature. Product descriptions are there with measurements and the prices are comparable.

Beacon's Closet

A New York based company that has three physical shops, Beacon's Closet isn't just dedicated to vintage clothing but also modern clothing. Focusing on their vintage selection, Beacon's Closet has a much smaller amount of items compared to RustyZipper, but their layout and the items that are available make it worth shopping at. Prices are comparable to sometimes on the lower end for vintage items. The product descriptions are just enough information, nothing more and nothing less.

Some Like it Vintage

I was drawn in by their simple logo accompanied by an awesome vintage inspired couple's picture. This site has a good amount of items and has a good balance of women's to men's clothing (having men's vintage clothing is important to me, being a guy and all). The site leaves something to be desired with the thumbnails being pretty small and the layout under the logo being not as simple and pristine as the logo is. However, the selection, the amount of pictures available per item, and the product description give the buyers a good idea what they are purchasing. Prices are comparable to high.

Dorothea's Closet Vintage

Dorothea has a pretty large closet to hold all her items from the 1800's to the 1980s. A good selection with an interesting artistic layout. The product descriptions are good and include good measurements. The drawback is this is a women's only store. The dress selection is great but all items are priced on the higher side. The items are pretty awesome, so if you are willing and have the money, this is a good place to get some unique items.

Etsy

And last, but not least, the awesome Etsy.com. If you are looking for the place with the most variety and a bunch of different shops in one place, Etsy would be the place to go for your vintage clothing needs. Each seller does it different, so you won't always get the best product descriptions and/or prices. The prices on Etsy go from the cheap to the expensive, so searching within Etsy is key. Check out groups and teams dedicated to vintage clothing, like Vintage Lovers.

Of course there are many more online shops and places to purchase vintage clothing, these just happen to be a few of my favorite places to shop and check out items.
